Strawberry Milk Cult Doesn't Even Like Milk?

Name: Strawberry Milk Cult (Josh, Dylan)
Pronouns: He/Him
Age: 18
Zodiac: Capricorn, Aquarius
OFF THE RECORD: How are you all doing on self isolation/quarantine? Is there anything you’re missing like crazy right now?
STRAWBERRY MILK CULT - DYLAN: We’re doing pretty good right now. The only thing we’re missing is Planet Fitness and that’s it.
OTR: You guys recently released a single, “Zoinks”. Can you tell us a little about the creation process of that song (lyrics, instrumental, and recording)?
DYLAN: “Zoinks” was probably the easiest song we’ve made. I had just finished watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and I love the film’s soundtrack, which is mostly performed by the fictional band “Sex Bob-omb” so I had those sort of vibes in my head, laid down a super distorted bass line and ad-libbed all the vocals on the spot.
OTR: What is it like having an album full of music you created out in the world that people love?
DYLAN: It’s been pretty surreal. We never expected anyone to ever even listen to our music, so the fact that any group of people have enjoyed the album at all is pretty cool.
OTR: Why did you name the song “Toby Flenderson” Toby Flenderson? Is it because the unrequited pining Toby had for Pam, or am I reading too much into the lyrics?
DYLAN: The title of the song doesn’t really mean anything, I just thought it was a good fit because the song had a sad sort of sound, and Toby Flenderson is the saddest man there ever was.
OTR: What is it like being independent and based out of Texas? Do you guys ever feel like you’re limited to what you can create because of your location right now?
DYLAN: I would say that we don’t experience any limits on what we create. However, whenever we play live shows, people in our area are usually older southerners, so they only want to hear us play “Sweet Home Alabama” 40 times.
OTR: You’ve definitely heard this question before, but would you mind sharing how you guys became a band?
DYLAN: When we were sophomores in high school, we were sent to a private Christian school because we were caught indulging in some of the Devil’s lettuce, which is how Josh and I became good buds. I met our lead guitarist, who is the sweetest boy, at a music summer camp in Dallas called “Camp Jam” (shoutout, of course) We had always jokingly talked about starting a generic indie band with twangy guitars, so we just did one day, and it’s been great!
OTR: Why strawberry milk? Why not chocolate milk? Why not just milk?
DYLAN: Strawberry Milk Cult is a name we got from a random band name generator online, and it stuck. None of us even like milk.
OTR: What are three artists you would like to collaborate with or meet in the future?
DYLAN: Mickey Darling is a band we’ve enjoyed that shares a lot of similarities with us, so we’d love to collaborate with them. I’d also personally love to meet The Strokes one day, just because they’ve had such a big impact on my musical taste and style. Thom Yorke is another artist we’d love to meet. He’s had sort of the same effect on Josh that the Strokes have had on me.
OTR: What are your favorite colors?
DYLAN: Mine is mustard yellow, and Josh’s is ruby red.
OTR: What are your feelings on Friends, the TV show?
DYLAN: Overrated. Josh hates the laugh tracks.
OTR: What’s next for Strawberry Milk Cult? What can we expect from you guys in the future?
DYLAN: We’ve got a single coming out this month called “Loser, Lover (Drugstore Blues)” and we’re really excited to keep working on new stuff for as long as people will listen :)
